Champions Cant handle an in-form Dale
GO NORTH EAST NORTHUMBERLAND AND TYNESIDE SENIOR LEAGUE
TYNEDALE are joint top of Division A1 after winning their first two games.
They enjoyed the result of the day when they beat champions Ashington, who had gone undefeated last season, by 31 runs at Langwell Crescent.
The home side won the toss and put Tynedale in to bat and they totalled 155-7, skipper Tom Cant scoring 46 and James Rainford 40.
They put on 93 for the third wicket after coming together at 16-2.
Ashington’s James Harmison bowled well, taking 3-24, to prevent the middle-order batting pushing on for a larger total.
However, Tynedale made life hard for the champions and struck early, the home side reduced to 15-2 and 32-3 - 16-year-old Matthew Percival grabbing 5-25 off just 8.1 overs.
Wicket-keeper Daniel Grant was the only batsman to show any resistance, making 31, before he was run out by David Newton.
Skipper Cant said: “It was a bit of a shock result.
“This season’s plan was for us to win enough games to consolidate in the league but it was an excellent all-round team performance by us to win the game.
“We have lost six players from last season and have replaced those with a mixture of the younger lads and older players who have stepped back up and we have made a good start.”
The other two teams who have also won their first two games and are on 40 points are Lanchester and Shotley Bridge - and both teams clinched easy wins at the weekend.
Lanchester triumphed by 10 wickets at Newcastle City and Shotley Bridge overcame Ryton by 111 runs.
