NORTH East pop star Cheryl and One Direction singer Liam Payne have revealed they have named their baby son Bear – to predictable mickey-taking on social media.

The new parents decided the name suited their newborn after he arrived on March 22.

Five-week-old Bear is also likely to take his father’s surname. Cheryl, previously Tweedy, Cole and Fernandez-Versini, is currently operating without a surname.

A source said: “Cheryl and Liam wanted to get to know their baby before deciding on a name.

“They spent over a week getting to know him first before deciding. They wanted to get to know him before they decided on the name. They didn’t have the name Bear before the birth.

“But they’d been thinking of a name since meeting him and they just felt it suited him. They love their little baby Bear Payne and are truly over the moon and loving being parents for the first time together.”

Fans took to social media following the news to share their thoughts on the baby name.

Natalie Barlow said: “I really love the name Bear for Cheryl and Liam’s baby.”

Jordan Keaveny wrote: “Absolutely love the name Bear and had it in my list. Good choice by Cheryl & Liam.”

But Lauren Archibald wasn’t quite so sure. She said: “Seriously, why do celebs not go for normal baby names..Bear!!! What the hell!! #cheryl&liam.”

Cheryl, 33, gave birth to Bear at London’s Chelsea and Westminster Hospital on March 22.

Announcing the birth of their new arrival, she said: “Liam and I became parents to an incredibly beautiful, healthy baby boy looking like a dream. Although he still doesn’t have a name he is already stealing hearts. We are all madly in love and overwhelmingly happy with our little arrival.”

Liam, 23, broke his silence three days after the birth, on Mother’s Day, saying he felt “very blessed” by the arrival of their first child.

But a wave of cheesy puns poured over Twitter after news of the baby’s name emerged.

One user wrote: “Was the birth so painful that Cheryl wanted him to remember it for the rest of his life by naming him Bear Payne??”

Another added: “Bear Payne is a feeling you get when you stand on Lego, not a baby’s name?”

Another joked: “Let’s hope he can Bear the Payne of this name.”

Meanwhile, others targeted baby Payne’s surname, suggesting Window, Back or Nagging would have been the right first name.
