Kitten trapped inside a wall for three days

-

A 12-WEEK-OLD kitten had a lucky escape after she was trapped inside a wall for three days.

County Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue Service (CDDFRS) was called to a house in Durham on Wednesday after a resident reported hearing meowing inside her home.

Firefighters spent two and a half hours smashing a hole in the wall at the home so the kitten could be freed.

RSPCA animal collection officer (ACO) Rowena Proctor said: “The caller, who doesn’t own the kitten, heard a meowing coming from somewhere inside the house.

“Normally with calls like these, we find that the noise was actually coming from somewhere else but when I arrived there was definite meowing from inside the wall.

“She was lucky to make it out at all. After smashing into the wall, we still couldn’t see or reach the kitten so we decided to leave some food for her, hoping this would coax her out in time.

“Then I saw there was a loose brick which had been knocked out. Firefighters pulled it out and I reached inside to feel this fluffy little kitten round the corner.”

ACO Proctor managed to pull the kitten out and bring her to safety.

“She was covered in dust and mess, she looked such a sight,” she added.

“Amazingly, she wasn’t injured, just very hungry.”

A CDDFRS spokesman said: “Although this is quite an unusual incident for us to be involved with, we were very happy to assist in rescuing the kitten and had the necessary equipment to do so. We hope her owners are traced very soon.”

It is believed the kitten may have climbed into a small hole in the wall when the homeowner left her back door open for her dogs to come inside.
