Trout active on top of the water GAME ANGLING

- By DAVID CARRICK

STILLWATER trout anglers have been experiencing some great topof-the-water dry fly sport again this week. Good hatches of fly, especially Hawthorn Flies and Midges, have had the feeding trout very active on many of our stillwaters.

Buzzers fished just under the surface and CdC Emergers have also figured in some excellent sport.

The big catches have continued with many anglers catching well into double figures and some well over 20 and even as many as 50 in a session! Evening rises are becoming more prolific as things warm up but as day temperatures rise and bright conditions prevail early and late may soon be the best times.

On the rivers, salmon sport has been slow. Bywell has had a few fish recently and odd ones have been caught on the main Tyne.

The odd fish are coming in on the tides and some have been seen taking the weir at Wylam over the last few weeks. Some small fish have also been seen and these are not what Tyne anglers would call normal. There has been a few fish in the lower river bearing large patches of white fungus.

Our local rivers are badly in need of good spates to give them a flush out and bring in runs of fish from the sea.

Sweethope Loughs hosted the Ashington Kingfishers Loch Style club boat competition at the weekend, 25 rods took part landing 81 trout. The winner was Bruce Tait with eight trout for 8.89kg. Keith Row was runner-up with eight fish for 8.84kg. Scott Nellins was third with six trout for 8.29kg.

Chatton Trout Fishery is holding an All Night Fish-in on Friday, June 16. Interested anglers should contact the fishery.

The Jack Charlton Trout Cup for Disabled Anglers takes place on Wednesday, June 7 at Kielder Water.

There is a new venue for what was a Cumbrian Event at Bessy Beck Fishery. This event is replaced by the Northumbrian and Cumbrian Jack Charlton Disabled Anglers Trout Cup at Sweethope Loughs. This is for bank and boat anglers fishing worm or fly.

For those fishing the Kielder event, entry forms will be available there for the Sweethope event. For those not fishing Kielder, entry forms can be acquired from Pat Redfern tel 0121 4296107 or email pat.redfern@ blueyonder.co.uk The Children’s Day at Sharpley Springs Trout Fishery is on Sunday, October 8.
