VACANCIES for jobs including scientists, nurses and other healthcare workers are lying unfilled for months, highlighting the shortage of skilled staff in the UK, a report reveals.

Research by jobs site Adzuna found that a fifth of science jobs and one in 10 healthcare and nursing vacancies remain on offer after 90 days of being advertised.

The struggle for skilled workers is particularly hitting cities such as London, Cambridge and Brighton, as well as areas in the North East including Middlesbrough and Sunderland, it was reported.

Graduate jobs and part-time positions are among the biggest sectors struggling to fill vacancies, according to Adzuna.

Doug Monro, co-founder of Adzuna, said: “Some areas of the jobs market have clearly fallen victim to a talent shortage, which has only been worsened by Brexit uncertainty.

“A vacancy lying open for three months or more means a job needed but not done, an employer’s nightmare, seriously dampening prospects for our STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths) hubs like Cambridge.

“Never has it been more important to focus on up-skilling home-grown talent for our shortage sectors.

“Reassuring overseas talent about their long-term prospects in the UK would also take some of the pressure off these struggling areas.”
