TWO teenagers have admitted their roles in a nine-hour police stand-off in the West End of Newcastle.

The youths, aged 17 and 16, made their second appearance before a district judge at North Tyneside Youth Court on Wednesday.

Both had previously pleaded guilty to affray but have now admitted further offences of criminal damage and resisting or obstructing a police officer. The pair, who cannot be named for legal reasons, were arrested and charged along with another youth after climbing on to properties on Buxton Gardens in Westerhope on April 30. Missiles, including cans and bricks, were thrown from the roof during the nine-hour stand-off.

The 16-year-old, from the Newcastle area, pleaded guilty to six counts of damaging motor vehicles, belonging to three different people, and two of damaging two properties on the street. He also admitted obstructing a police officer.

His co-accused, the 17-year-old, pleaded guilty to three charges of damaging properties, one of resisting an police officer and a separate charge of stealing clothing from Asda on the same date.

A further youth, aged 16 and from

the Ashington area, had already admitted one count of affray, obstructing a police officer, resisting a police officer and assaulting a police officer, as well as 14 counts of criminal damage, which included vehicles and properties.

Minimal details of the case were read to the court but all three will next appear together on June 14 at North Tyneside Youth Court to be sentenced.

The 16-year-old from the Newcastle area was refused bail and remanded in a youth detention centre until the next court hearing.

The 17-year-old was remanded into local authority care and the 16-year-old from Ashington was given conditional bail at a previous hearing.

District Judge Begley said: “I will deal with all of you on the next occasion.”
