INJUSTICE 2 PS4, XBOX ONE. iOS

THEY may not always make the best movies, but when it comes to fighting games DC’s characters pack a mighty punch.

Injustice 2 is just about one of the finest fighting games I’ve ever had to pleasure to play.

It’s the sequel to 2013’s Injustice: Gods Among Us, which itself proved a hit with DC fans and gamers alike.

And it wasn’t just the action which proved popular. Gods Among Us was written in collaboration with DC Comics’ writers, it was an original story which itself sparked a comic series.

It’s hard to write a review for Injustice 2 without giving away massive spoilers from Gods Among Us, so apologies if you’ve not played it, but you have been warned.

The sequel picks up in the aftermath of Superman and Batman’s disagreement. Batman and his insurgency are trying to piece the community back together, but the arrival of a new threat ‘The Society’ led by Gorilla Grodd, means Bats must form a new team of superheroes to take on the supervillains.

The fighting mechanics are tight – and each individual character brings something different to the fight. Each character has had their walking speed increased, which makes for more frenetic bouts, and there are some truly mindblowing special moves which you do not want to find yourself on the end of.

There’s a jaw dropping amount of content here – from a huge roster of playable characters, to bright, colourful arenas, dripping with items you can weaponise to throw at your opponents.

There’s a new loot-dropping system, Gear System, that rewards players with costume pieces and equipment you can use to customise your characters’ appearances and modify their abilities and stats.

The Gear System encourages players to develop their own unique style by rewarding them for their efforts. Developer NetherRealm wanted both casual and hardcore players to get something from the game, so for the hardcore gamers there are rewards in creating and developing your own fighting style – while, for casuals who like to dip in and out, there’s the ability to earn ways to customise your characters.

There is also a day-one patch which weighs in at just under 1gb, so, if you’re expecting to hit the ground running, you’re in for a disappointment.

Injustice 2 may not be the game we asked for, but it’s certainly the game we deserve.
