Water main burst: Flood-hit roads are set to remain closed over the weekend

-

REPAIRS to a road flooded by a burst water main are set to continue into the weekend.

The A189 Jesmond Dene Road in Newcastle was closed to traffic after becoming submerged in water from a broken pipe on Wednesday morning.

Metro trains were cancelled for more than 12 hours as a result of the burst, which began at around 5am, left parts of the track submerged and closed roads led to traffic being backed up around the city.

Commuters expecting to take the bus or train to work were forced to find an alternative, leading to lines of people walking into the city centre.

Newcastle City Council closed Jesmond Dene Road while the water was drained and repair work carried out.

On Thursday afternoon, one lane of the road was reopened to traffic, with the second lane set to stay closed until tomorrow.

Temporary traffic lights have been set up as repairs continue over the next few days.

Northumbrian Water said: “The repair being carried out will remove the need to return at a later date to install a permanent surface.

“We are very sorry for the continued inconvenience to customers and commuters and thank them for their patience and understanding. Customers can keep up to date with updates on our Twitter account, @nwater_ care.”

Part of the Metro track at Ilford Road station become flooded after the pipe burst and the line was closed between South Gosforth and Jesmond.

Trains were running again by 5.45pm on Wednesday after repairs and an inspection was carried out.
