New name on King Cup as Gosforth win

-

BENFIELD have hosted the Newcastle Under-11 King Cup, which saw the four league champions come together to challenge each other for the honour of being the Newcastle champions.

All the games proved to be very close. In the first semi-final, it was very tight between Gosforth Central and Walkergate. Gosforth finally took the lead with the last touch of the first half. The ball was knocked into the box from a freekick and an attacker managed to direct the ball home with his head. Gosforth sealed things in the second half with a second goal.

The second semi-final went to penalties as English Martyrs and Westerhope played out a 0-0 draw.

With Westerhope 2-0 up after the first three spot-kicks, their keeper injured his wrist trying to save the next English Martyrs penalty, which found the net. Westerhope had to change their keeper but he wasn’t needed – they put their final penalty away to win 3-1.

English Martyrs, however, won the third-place play-off, beating Walkergate 1-0.

In the final, Gosforth did the pressing early on but were unable to breach the Westerhope defence and reserve goalkeeper. The halftime whistle blew with no goals scored. In the second half, Gosforth managed to create a three against one situation and Sam Yields finished the move off to put them one up. Westerhope tried to rally and put Gosforth under pressure trying to equalise, but Gosforth held on. This meant a new name went on to the trophy, as Gosforth Central had never won it before.
