Price is right at Raby - despite a fever attack

-

CHLOE PRICE defied a sudden attack of hay fever to lift the women’s title in yesterday’s Raby Castle 10k Road Race, writes BILL McGUIRK.

Nearly 500 competitors faced the starter for two circuits of the beautiful Raby Castle grounds, Price working her way through to finish in 17th place overall.

It was a welcome return to action for Birtley’s Price after being on the sidelines for a month - and she enjoyed the warm conditions before having to stop and walk for a minute or so.

However, by that time she was well clear of her rivals and she managed to get going again before being overtaken.

Price said: “I am delighted to have won - it is a beautiful course, though the hill on each of the two circuits is quite challenging.’’

Price, whose winning time was 40min 15sec, came home 1:39 ahead of Bernadette Caygill (Darlington) with Sue Phillipps, also of Darlington, completing the one-two-three.

In the men’s contest, Michael Joyeux (Quakers) led throughout to win comfortably in 34:32.

Joyeux, who finished in bronzemedal position in the recent North East Counties 10,000 Metres Track Championships, led by 20 seconds at the halfway point ahead of Hartlepool Burn Road’s Paul Wilson with John Clifford (Evenwood) a similar distance back in third.

Joyeux extended his advantage to 34 seconds at the finish as Clifford reeled in Wilson on the second circuit to claim second place.
