Shield victory a Senior moment to remember
MORPETH Town Seniors wrapped up the final silverware of the season by beating Cramlington Town Reserves to claim the Tyneside Amateur Challenge Shield.
Saturday’s 2-0 win was enough to wrap up a fiercely-contested final at Newcastle Benfield.
Cramlington had had the better of both league encounters between the sides this season, as well as claiming victory when they had met in the semi-final of the Neville Cowey Cup.
But from the outset it was clear this was a much more evenly matched affair.
The deadlock was broken after 20 minutes, when Nick O’Neill was felled towards the left edge of the Cramlington penalty area.
Ash McAlpine stepped up and curled in a perfect free kick off the angle of crossbar and post to give Morpeth the lead.
Seniors doubled their lead on the hour mark when a fantastic cross from the right was met by a superb header from Jack Freeman, who powered the ball beyond the goalkeeper.
There were few further chances at either end, with Kris Coppen heading against the crossbar from a Cramlington corner.
Town were just four games away from a potential treble as they looked to cap off a fantastic season.
But the final whistle instead sparked great celebrations for Morpeth, who ended their first season in the league with a piece of silverware.
