On the hunt for Good samaritan

- By LISA HUTCHINSON Reporter lisa.hutchinson@trinitymirror.com

PARTIALLY-SIGHTED Martin Rivers is on a mission to find a Good Samaritan who paid for his shopping when he was caught short of cash at the till.

And he is wanting to find the kind woman who has restored his faith in human nature so he can thank her properly.

Martin is registered blind and was buying his groceries in Morrisons supermarket in Byker, Newcastle, when the bill ran to £17.

But when the person behind saw him putting groceries back because he didn’t have enough money, she offered her credit card to pay.

“I couldn’t believe that someone would do that for me,” said Martin, 51, who was with his guide dog Tibby.

“After what happened with the terrorist attack in Manchester, it has restored my faith in human nature.”

Martin added: “I’m on benefits and don’t have a lot of money. I’m on Employment Support Allowance and get paid every fortnight. It was when I was in Morrisons buying my essentials when I went to the till and it came to £17. I didn’t have that much on me so I started putting items back. The bill came down to £12.59 and I was still 10p short.

“But then something very kind happened. A woman offered to pay my bill for me. Not just giving me the 10p I was short, but my full bill.

“I offered her the £10 I had, but she wouldn’t accept it. It was such a nice gesture.

“I was grateful but shocked and thanked her. But I would really like to find her so I can thank her properly.”

Martin has asked ChronicleLive to put out his appeal to find the woman concerned.

“I don’t know if it was because I had a guide dog with me that she paid, but she did a very kind thing,” added Martin, who was born partially sighted.

“There are so many atrocities going on across the world that this shows there are nice people out there.”

Martin’s Good Samaritan was in Morrisons on Shields Road at around 6pm on Wednesday, May 24, 2017.

Morrison’s store manager Paul Harrison said: “This is such a lovely thing for one of our shoppers to do. It proves there are some lovely people out there.”
