CHAOTIC SCENES EMERGE OF MASS BANK BRAWL

- By SONIA SHARMA Reporter sonia.sharma@trinitymirror.com

FISTS fly as rivals clash in violent scenes which horrified onlookers.

The snap from a video captures the moment at the Tyne bank between Ouseburn’s Free Trade Inn and the Tyne Bar in Newcastle and shows how scores of people were gathered at the site on Friday evening.

At around 7pm, the mass brawl broke out involving up to 40 people.

Onlookers lining the bank were stunned as the fight spilled down the hill towards fencing.

In the video, captured as the fight was under way, a number of people can be seen scrapping before a missile is hurled towards the centre of the crowd.

A spokesman for Northumbria Police said: “A 29-year-old man was arrested and has now been released under investigation.

“Our inquiries are ongoing and we would appeal for any witnesses to come forward.”

A man was taken to the city’s Royal Victoria Infirmary following the altercation and needed treatment for facial injuries.

The Tyne Bar was forced to close for the evening and a sign was put up on its door that read ‘Bar closed due to unforeseen circumstances. Open tomorrow as normal.’

After the incident, a 6ft wooden fence was erected at the grassed site to stop members of the public gaining access.

Most of the area was already encircled by a metal fence but drinkers could get in by going over a lower fence at the bottom of the bank.

On Saturday, a new 6ft structure was erected behind the smaller fence, blocking the area off completely but a petition has since been launched with more than 1,600 signatures.

Anyone with information is asked to ring the police on 101 and quote log number 1066 of 26/05/17.
