Many years ago we had my home team Gateshead almost winning promotion to the Second Division in their first season in 1930 but they lost to Lincoln City on goal difference, never again to threaten promotion.

Sunderland were at one stage the only First Division side for many years not to have been relegated but have been back and forward ever since.

I have recently watched Newcastle on the TV, who I never missed at home, along with Gateshead, in the 1950s.

My unforgetta­ble match has to be when we beat Newport County 13-0 in October 1946, when Len Shackleton scored six goals and with Charlie Wayman bagging four.

Defenders Corbett and Cowell were full backs. Bobby Cowell came to my place of work, Norwood Cokeworks, showing off his first cup winners’ medal in 1951.
