Mohawks slay Dragons to finish season in style

WHITLEY Mohawks completed their English Under-13 North Division Two League season with an 11-5 victory over Deeside Dragons at Hillheads.

The win moved the Mohawks above Deeside, who finished third behind league winners Sutton Sting.

The home side was ahead after just three minutes when Ben Fryer found the net - and three minutes later James Toby doubled the lead.

The first powerplay of the game went to Deeside and they made it count when Alex Faulkner reduced the deficit almost straight from the face-off at 10.37.

The two-goal cushion was restored in the final minute of the opening period when Owen Yarrow fired home for 3-1.

Yarrow scored again with his second of the game and ninth for the season when he made the score 4-1 at 17.34.

Five minutes later Fryer’s second of the game and 18th of the season increased the advantage to 5-1.

Four goals were then shared equally in a four-minute spell as the Mohawks ended the middle period holding a 7-3 lead.

Josh Hutton and Toby were on the scoresheet for the Tynesiders.

At the start of the final period Whitley were quick out of the blocks as Bailey Stone hit his third goal of the season just 16 seconds in.

Leading scorer Matthew Betham nabbed his 35th counter of the campaign 42 seconds later.

From the face-off the Dragons notched their fourth strike of the game when Michael Price completed his hat-trick marker.

Toby hit his third of the game and 11th of the season in the 36th minute on the powerplay to enable the Mohawks to reach double figures and Faulkner’s second of the game at 38.56 gave Deeside their fifth goal of the game.

There was still time for Hutton to complete the scoring with three minutes remaining.

It was his second finish of the match and eighth of the season.

Mohawks’ players figure prominantl­y in the league’s leading scorers chart with four in the top 10 and five in the top 20.

Betham was second recording 35 goals and 16 assists.

Owen Curry netted 23 goals and eight assists, Fryer was eighth {18+9} and Toby nineth {11+15}.

Yarrow made the top 20 in seventeent­h {9+9}.

THE Mohawks are next in action at the Billingham Stars Under-13 Tournament on June 10 and 11 at Billingham’s Forum Ice Arena.
