Deverdics double seals Montagu’s glory week

-

MONTAGU and North Fenham Under16 Girls enjoyed a week to remember.

Firstly, they clinched trophy success at a tournament in Skegness.

The Newcastle squad claimed 7-0 and 3-0 victories in their first two games before drawing their last match of the first day of the competition 0-0.

The next day they won 3-1 before rounding the weekend off with a 2-1 victory to take the trophy.

Emma Summerson finished top goalscorer for the tournament and Latisha Fowler conceded only two goals all weekend.

This set the girls up nicely for their Rhya Story Memorial Cup final against Bedlington Bulldogs, which they won 2-1 after extra time.

Bedlington started off the stronger and it was no surprise when they went ahead when Rebecca Henderson was on the end of a brilliant cross to head home.

Montagu rallied quickly and equalised when Olivia Black beat two players before crossing to Christina Deverdics, who took the ball around the Bulldogs’ Caitlin Dunns before slotting home.

In the second half Montagu pushed for the winner but the final whistle went with the scores still level.

Finally, in extra time, Leila Errington won a tackle in defence and then turned defence into attack with a brilliant pass to Morgan Donald on the left wing.

She broke down the line before crossing for Deverdics, who fired Montagu ahead.

The Bulldogs threw caution to the wind in search of an equaliser but, despite constant pressure, Montagu managed to hold on for the win.

Deverdics received the player of the match award.

Team manager Andy Donald said: “The girls were fantastic all week and thoroughly deserved their success for the effort they have put in this season.”
