Sevens up for Glover as he shines for England at Twickenham

-

NEWCASTLE University student Harry Glover helped England secure second place at the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series.

Playing alongside his brother Will, the first-year politics and economics student helped ease England past Spain (28-7), Australia (19-12), and Samoa (24-19) in the London leg of the series.

The trio of victories set up an exciting quarter-final clash with South Africa.

Glover and his team-mates blitzed past the newly-crowned World Series champions (17-12) and then Canada in the semi-final (24-5).

Playing in front of tens of thousands at Twickenham, Scotland claimed top honours with a 12-7 victory in the final.

The HSBC London sevens was preceded by the HSBC Paris Sevens, where England finished fourth after wins against Spain (31-0), France (24-7) and a 12-12 draw against Kenya.

In the last eight, England defeated USA (26-12) before losing to Scotland (17-19) in the semi-final and to New Zealand (5-12) in the bronze-medal match.

England finished second overall with 164 points, almost 30 behind champions South Africa and ahead of third-placed Fiji (150 points).

The second-place finish was England’s best performance since 2006.

Glover said: “It was another incredible experience to play for the England Sevens team in Paris and London.

“Playing alongside my brother in both tournaments will live long in the memory.

“To be part of a team which came second in the world rankings is a fantastic feeling.”
