Charity raises a smile for Alfie with Disney trip
YOUNGSTER BATTLING LEUKAEMIA SET TO MEET MICKEY MOUSE
A LITTLE cancer battler is to go on a dream family holiday to meet Mickey Mouse.
Alfie Taylor, from Stanley, County Durham, has been battling leukaemia for over a year, enduring gruelling treatments.
But the brave five-year-old’s parents are preparing to take him on a trip of a lifetime – thanks to a charity’s help.
Mum Emma, 27, and dad Alex, 29, are “over the moon” to be able to take their little lad on the special trip to Disneyland Paris.
Emma said: “It was last April when he was diagnosed so it has been over a year this battle. It’s been difficult for him but he is getting there now and his doctors are really pleased with how he is doing.
”He had 50 hospital appointments over the last year, and he really doesn’t like the hospital at all. He is starting to get some energy back and is a bit more himself.”
Despite making huge improvements, little Alfie is facing two more years of treatment as doctors have said he will need regular chemotherapy and appointments up until September 2019.
Durham-based charity Bringing a Smile Back, headed up by Kevin Hill, has raised the cash to pay for the family to take their much deserved holiday.
Kevin said: “That’s what it is all about, bringing a smile back to the little lad’s face when he has been through so much.”
Emma, a civil servant, and her husband Alex, a bricklayer, are looking forward to spending quality family time with their little lad on the holiday in September. She said: “He watches the adverts on the TV and says ‘I want to go there’ and now he will get to.
“It’ll be nice for us to have family time together.” Since the South Moor Greenland Primary School pupil was diagnosed with the cruel cancer, the community of Stanley has rallied around Alfie, mum Emma says.
“The support has been fantastic, we’re a real community here in Stanley and at times like this it shows.”
