Be a hero by supporting Open event

STOCKSFIELD Golf Club is hosting a tournament with a difference on Saturday - a Superhero Charity Open in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support.

Pals Andy Ward and Neil Henderson are behind the event, which will see up to 250 players teeing off for a good cause.

Both are keen amateur golfers whose families have been touched by cancer.

Henderson, club captain at Stocksfield, lost his dad to the disease and Ward’s father is in remission following aggressive treatment for blood cancer.

The pair have joined forces with their local club and are calling on players to take to the fairways dressed as their favourite superhero to help them to raise their £10,000 target.

The tournament is backed by Newcastle Audi, who have donated a car for the hole in one competition.

Other local businesses including Thompsons of Prudhoe, SCA, Tesco, and Red Hot Property, along with individual supporters, have sponsored tee boxes and donated prizes.

Ward said: “Macmillan Cancer Support provides an invaluable service to families.

“With one in three of the UK population affected by the disease this illness is close to many people’s hearts.

“We have both had experience of cancer in our families and Macmillan provides an exceptionally important advice service, support network and often a lifeline for sufferers and their families, which is why we wanted to do something positive and fun to show our gratitude.

“We have had a great response so far both in terms of tee sponsors and entries but we are still encouraging more teams to come forward so we have the maximum numbers.

“Anyone wanting to take part in the day or wishing to donate prizes for the evening charity auction should contact us.”

The tournament is open to mixed teams, official and unofficial handicap players.

Entry fees are £20 per pair for members, £30 for a member with a guest and £40 for a pair of visitors.
