Borini may be heading back to homeland

-

FABIO Borini has his heart set on a Serie A return as he hopes AC Milan make an official offer for him.

The Sunderland forward will leave the Stadium of Light this summer following relegation, Celtic believed to have made an enquiry with the Black Cats.

However, Italian giants AC Milan have also been credited with interest.

Sunderland are yet to receive a formal offer from the San Siro outfit but reports in Italy suggest Borini is holding out for the move back to his homeland.

The 26-year-old forward was last in Italy for the 2011-12 campaign, enjoying the most fruitful term of his career to date after netting nine goals in 24 appearances for Roma.

His career has stagnated at Sunderland somewhat in the last two years, however, and he was one of many who underperformed as the Black Cats were relegated from the top flight. He netted just once in 15 games.

AC Milan are expected to have a busy summer after gaining new ownership.

They are expected to spend big, with manager Vincenzo Montella hoping to turn the club’s recent fortunes around and mount a serious challenge to Juventus for the Serie A title after they finished sixth last term.

Whether Montella sees Borini as part of those plans remains to be seen.
