A petrol bomb was hurled through the window of a prosecco bar in South Shields late on Sunday night.

The Kings Prosecco Lounge on King George Road was damaged when a brick was thrown through the bar’s window, followed by a petrol bomb.

The bar — formerly called the The White Ensign — was shut at the time of the arson attack and no one was inside.

Police investigating the attack say the petrol bomb quickly burned-out and only caused slight damage, but has left the bar’s owners shocked.

Investigations into the arson are now under way and officers are appealing for information about the incident, which is believed to have happened at around midnight.

Detective Inspector Sean Mcguigan, of Southern CID, said: “A full investigation is ongoing to identify those responsible for this arson but we do need anyone with information to get in touch.

“Thankfully nobody was in the premises at the time so there were no injuries.

“The object burned out very quickly and so there is only minor damage to the inside of the premises.

“The owners are obviously quite shaken by this unprovoked incident and we are now working with them to try and establish the reasons as to why they may have been targeted.”

Northumbria Police are appealing for anyone who saw anyone acting suspiciously in the area around the time of the arson to call police on 101.

If you have any information that may help, please call police on 101 quoting log 16 19/06/17, or contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
