Man arrested after 41 year old is stabbed

A SUSPECT was arrested after an alleged stab attack left a man in hospital.

Police found a 41-year-old man near the Lidl store, on Boldon Lane, South Shields with a stab wound.

Paramedics and police attended and officers arrested a man on suspicion of assault.

The injured man was taken to Newcastle’s Royal Victoria Infirmary for treatment and he has now been transferre­d to the city’s Freeman Hospital.

His condition is described as stable and his injuries are not thought to be life threatenin­g.

Det Insp Sean McGuigan said: “We have additional patrols being carried out in the area to reassure the public and answer any concerns they may have. We are treating this as an isolated incident.”

A police cordon remained in place more than five hours after the stabbed man was found.

A North East Ambulance Service spokeswoma­n said: “We attended a call-out in South Shields — we were called at 4.51am to Boldon Lane.

“We sent a hazardous area response team, one rapid response paramedic and one ambulance.

“We have taken one patient to the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle.”

Police are appealing for witnesses and anyone with informatio­n is asked to contact police on 101, quoting reference number 136 of 20/06/17.
