‘Out of danger’

-

A schoolboy left fighting for his life after being mown down by a car while celebrating Eid in Newcastle’s West End is “improving”.

The seven-year-old was seriously injured in the collision near Westgate Sports Centre on Sunday, and remains in intensive care at Newcastle’s Royal Victoria Infirmary.

But his relatives have said his condition is slowly improving and believe he is now “out of danger”.

The boy’s father, who suffered a serious injury in the crash, also remains in hospital and is in a stable condition.

The family have been keeping a bedside vigil over the past three days as the child recovers.

Three children and three adults were initially taken to hospital following the crash and one child and two adults have been discharged.

Two fathers and their sons were injured in the chaos, along with a visitor from London who had travelled to Newcastle to join in the Eid prayers.

A woman leaving the event is believed to have lost control of her car, ploughing into the crowds leaving six people injured.

In the aftermath of the crash there was much speculation that the incident had been a terror attack, however police later confirmed they believed it was an accident.

A 42-year-old woman was arrested by police for causing serious injury by dangerous driving and has been released on conditional bail pending further investigation.
