New shopping hub could bring more than 180 jobs

THE RETAIL PARK WILL INCLUDE AN ALDI AND COSTA

Reporter MORE than 180 jobs could be coming to North Tyneside under plans to develop a new retail hub near the A19 Holystone roundabout.

Northumberland Estates have put together a scheme to develop land to the west of the Toby Carvery restaurant, just off the A186.

The first phase of the proposed scheme includes an Aldi store and a drive-thru Costa cafe as well as associated car parking spaces.

Details of the second phase are not available at this stage, however it is estimated that the whole project could create around 180 jobs with roles up for grabs in management, customer service, restocking, sales and cleaning.

Planning permission for the multi-million pound scheme was granted last year, however the developers have now submitted more detailed plans with North Tyneside Council.

The new Northumberland Retail Park will sit in an area where new housing developments are already being built and it is thought the services will help to serve the growing community.

Colin Barnes, head of planning and development at Northumberland Estates, said: “The site lies in the centre of North Tyneside’s largest growth area for housing and jobs.

“Directly adjacent are new housing developments at Backworth Park and at the Rising Sun site. We are also pleased to see the start of a major residential scheme which welcomes both Cussins and Robertson Homes to the area next to Backworth Golf Club.

“To the south Cobalt Business Park with around two million sq ft of office development is one of Europe’s largest business parks. The developments are a great sign of confidence in North Tyneside with good prospects for further jobs and investment in the coming years.

“Northumberland Retail Park is ideally located and highly accessible being on a major transport interchange with buses, trains, the Metro and with excellent road links. It will provide much-needed new services to the area as well as creating jobs.”
