CLARA Vale were knocked off top spot after losing at Whitley Bay by five wickets.

Jack Jeffrey took career-best figures of 6-31 as Clara Vale managed only 66.

Ivan Pearson finished 24 not out after a flurry of early wickets as Whitley Bay reached 69-5.

Bay move into second, level on points with Bomarsund but above them by virtue of more bonus points earned.

Backworth’s second XI now top the table after beating their Blagdon Park counterpar­ts by five wickets.

Matthew Burtinshaw (3-28), Nathan Collins (3-49) and Chris Race (3-36) combined to bowl out Blagdon for 153.

Ben Twizell (35 not out) and Collins (26 not out) saw Backworth home in reaching 156-5.

Bomarsund stay three points off the leaders after they won at Warenford by 60 runs.

Colin Thornton made 77 with Stephen Thain smashing 66 as Bomarsund amassed 213-7.

YoungsterA­dam Gardiner recorded figures of 4-20 off 12 overs as the hosts were bowled out for 153 in reply.

Civil Service also stay in contention after their 105-run success at home to Monkseaton.

The hosts posted 265-8, Nikhil Bharti smashing 89 and Shravan Nallagoni 66.

Ganesh Thorat (5-35) and Bharti (3-37) helped to bowl out Monkseaton for 160 in reply, Richard Ord left unbeaten on 47.

Ulgham continue to climb up the league after squeezing past Kirkley at home by three wickets.

Robert Grimmond claimed 5-55 as Kirkley were bowled out for 192.

Fifty-two wides were bowled while Christian Rowe (37) top-scored with the bat.

Opener Roy Haygarth hit 41 but Ulgham were nervously placed on 129-6.

Nick Dodds smashed seven boundaries, scoring a quick unbeaten 45 to steer the hosts to 196-7 and leave Kirkley still in the drop zone.

Hebburn stay bottom of the pile after their 121-run defeat at Whickham Seconds.

Peter Ruddick (70 not out) and Andrew Wilson (51) ensured Whickham reached 218-7.
