Ashley needs to pull finger out and splash cash for Rafa

AS Newcastle United fans we all share Rafa Benitez’s frustratio­ns with the current transfer situation.

We all would have wanted to see more signings than just Christian Atsu and Florian Lejeune by now.

It is a ridiculous market at the moment, there is no doubt about that - but I still think Newcastle have to up their game.

We are now into the second full week in July and Benitez has only been able to sign two players so far - and part of the reason for that seems to be the club just is not getting the business done.

I am all for trying to get the best deal possible - but there comes a point where you just have to put up or shut up.

If Rafa really wants a player, then Newcastle just need to pay the money. End of.

It should be as simple as that for Mike Ashley.

The Newcastle owner promised Rafa “every last penny” two months ago - so why doesn’t he just go and pay it? The problem with letting a deal drag on for weeks is it gives other clubs the chance to jump in and steal someone away from you.

Luckily, Lejeune had his heart set on playing under Rafa at Newcastle but Tammy Abraham was given the opportunit­y to have his head turned elsewhere.

If United had just gone in and done the deal straightaw­ay he would be part of the squad by now. Instead he chose Swansea, and no doubt his agent was heavily involved in that. It really annoys me how much money plays a part in football transfers now. I never once moved to a club purely for financial gain.
