Blocks of flats should be provided with portable fire extinguish­ers and occupiers should familiaris­e themselves with their location and means of operation.

Also, there is nothing to prevent occupiers getting their own small extinguish­ers in their own flats for immediate use if needed.

Most domestic fires start small and that is the best time to tackle them.
