Brian Dawson was top rod this week, with catches of 21 and 16 on various patterns. I Purvis caught 17 trout on Blobs, Cats Whisker and Damsels. Plenty of top-of-thewater action again this week with blownon terrestria­ls.

Sport continues to be very good, with plenty of surface action. Chris Hall caught 15, while local Phil Hambley had 15, 14 and 11 trout over three visits, all to Buzzers. John Allison from Stanley caught 14, and the best fish of 7lb was caught by Mick Patterson. Most anglers were catching more than 10 fish per visit. Klinkhamme­r, Foam Emergers, PTN and Montana were top flies.

CHATTON TROUT FISHERY 01668 215226 / NE66 5RF

Large caenis hatches (or fisherman’s curse as it is often called) made sport hard to come by when Felton Scouts visited the fishery. The all-nighter proved another real hit with those who attended. Sport was excellent on a variety of fly patterns.

DERWENT RESERVOIR 01207 255250 / DH8 9TT

203 anglers landed 515 trout to 3lb. Ernest Mosey landed 14 trout for his visit using an Olive Fritz pattern. Brian Hardy also bagged up, using a Black Fritz with an orange tail. Jim Sherriff took his eight trout on powerbait. Olive or Black Fritz, Cat’s Whisker and Muddlers were the top flies. Powerbait and Copper or Silver Tobies were best baits.

FONTBURN RESERVOIR 01669 621368 / NE61 4PL

96 anglers caught 221 trout to 3lb 12oz. Ray Batey from Morpeth had three beauties from 3lb 9oz to 3lb 12oz on powerbait. George Todd from Newcastle and D Ranson both landed 3lb-plus rainbows. Four-year-old Leo Candlith also landed a three-pounder. Buzzers and White Muddlers were the top flies; Chartreuse Powerbait and Magic Dust in a feeder were the best bait methods.

GRASSHOLME RESERVOIR 01833 641121 / DL12 0PW

133 anglers landed 400 trout to 4lb 8oz. Colin Parnaby landed eight trout on powerbait. A Emmerson landed eight fish, as did B Emmerson, while L Emmerson caught six. Jeff Walsh also took his limit bag. S Bilbrough landed 10 trout on fly using roving tactics. Dawson’s Olive, Black Fritz and Cats Whisker were the top flies. Best baits were White Mice Tails, worm and spinners.

HIGHAM LAKES 01661 860032 / NE20 0DH

Anglers have had tremendous sport with fly and bait. Robert Brown landed 12 trout for 24lb on ledgered powerbait. David Muir and son also weighed out 12 trout for 23lb on worm and powerbait.

HURY RESERVOIR 01833 641121 / DL12 9UP

Anglers averaged six fish per visit. Gordon Byers returned 12 trout on Black Hoppers, while K Bunnett returned eight trout on Yellow Fritz. A Marsden took six fine rainbows caught on Dawson’s Olive. Reedy Point to the Dam Wall produced the best sport. Small Black Dries, Hopper, Daddy and various Fritz lures. The Boil and Newhouse Bank fished well.

JUBILEE TROUT LAKES 01388 772611 / DL2 2UH

Sport has been good, with trout taking Buzzers at will in the top foot or so of water. Damsels have also figured in catches. Daddy Long Legs fished on the surface have aroused the interest of the trout, but they have often just turned away and not taken the fly. Phil Totten from Lanchester took the fish of the week at 7lb 10oz on a Buzzer.

KIELDER WATER 01434 251000 / NE48 1BT

124 rods caught 263 trout to 4lb. Davy Madderson landed eight trout for 17lb at Hawkhope on Powerbait. Andrew Coulson also landed eight trout, caught on sweetcorn and worm. Best flies were Orange Fritz, Black Hopper, Black Midge and Muddlers. Top boat areas were Bull Crag, Needs Hill and Whickhope.

KNITSLEY MILL 07960 747417 / DH8 9EL

Best times have been early and late, with Foam Beetles, Daddies, Wicked White and Black and Green Lures the top flies. There is to be a fishery clear-out on July 22. It’s £25 to enter and the angler catching the most fish goes off with £100. Tagged fish is now worth £240.

SWEETHOPE LOUGHS 01830 540349 / NE19 2PN

Top rod was Guy Nicholson with 20 trout, while his boat partner Jim Burtle caught eight, including one over 12lb. Gordon Boulding of Ashington Kingfisher­s lost count of the number of fish he caught. Anglers averaged more than three fish per visit. Hoppers, Shipman’s, Viva, Cormorant, Muddlers, Sedges, Bloodworm, Hare’s Ear, Daddies and Hawthorn Fly were top flies.

THRUNTON TROUT FISHERY 01665 574400 / 07795 002607

Among the big catches was Mick Brown from Bedlington, with 22 trout caught on a Rainbow Warrior. Tom Miller from Gosforth landed 10 on Black Hoppers and Sedges in a good evening session. Jim Burtle from Newcastle caught nine on dries, while Peter Davison from New Hartley caught 10 on Buzzers. Duncan Passmore from Ponteland landed eight on the Yellow Owl. Top flies were Hoppers, Buzzers, Bloodworm, Sedges, Damsels, Diawl Bach, Blobs and various dries.
