Man charged in murder investigat­ion

Reporter A 45-year-old man has been charged with the murder of Steven Coulter in Heaton, Newcastle.

Jason Downey, of Heaton Hall Road, will appear before magistrate­s this morning.

Mr Coulter, 59, was discovered dead at a flat in Heaton Hall Road in Newcastle last Thursday.

Detectives said he could have been dead for days before his body was found with a stab wound to the chest.

At around 10.12am that day police received a report of concern for male at an address in the street and officers forced entry to the flat.

Detectives are still appealing for informatio­n and particular­ly want to speak to anyone who may have seen Mr Coulter last weekend and are appealing for anyone who had seen him in the past two weeks to get in touch.

Senior investigat­ing officer Detective Inspector Dave English said: “We need to speak to anyone who may have seen Steven himself on the weekend of July 8-9 as we try to piece together the exact circumstan­ces behind his death.

“Our officers will remain in the area around the address this week to reassure anyone who has any concerns.”

Police investigat­ing the death of Mr Coulter are still calling for informatio­n about a man spotted in the area wearing a lumberjack-style jacket and straw hat. Northumbri­a Police say a man in the distinctiv­e clothing was spotted in the Heaton Hall Road area on Sunday, July 9 – the weekend Mr Coulter was last seen alive.
