Do pensioners need food banks?

-

C CESSFORD makes an interesting comparison between food banks and WW2 rations.

While I agree they provide an essential service, I find comments made by MPs, including Mr Corbyn, that nurses use them, a little curious.

The starting salary for a qualified nurse is more than £21k.

Do pensioner couples with a basic state pension, almost half of that, rely on them as well?

BILL RICALTON, Longhorsley operated on that site providing jobs for the local community.

These are the work of a small group of local residents enthusiastic about keeping the history of the area alive.

They include two wonderful gentlemen who remember what the village looked some 80 years ago.

The group are supported by North Tyneside Council, Bellway Homes who paid for the boards and their installation, students from Seaton Burn College and the Tyne and Wear Heritage Officer.

It is the start of a mining heritage trail which will take travellers on the journey of the coal trucks, along the disused wagon ways which are now part of the network of bridleways and cycle routes that the council has created throughout the borough, down to where the coal was loaded onto ships in the dock on the Tyne.

The next stage is through the countryside park and already Northumberland Wildlife Trust has joined the group in working on the display boards that will be in the park.

The group would like to welcome anyone from the area to join them whether you have lived in the village all your life or just moved in. Please contact me if you are interested. Coun MURIEL GREEN, Weetslade ward Tel: 0191 253 3761
