AGAINST THE LAW Wednesday, BBC2, 9pm
THIS year marks the 50th anniversary of the Sexual Offences Act, which decriminalised homosexual acts in England and Wales between adult males, in private. But this drama, which stars Daniel Mays and Mark Gatiss, suggests that the Act has its roots in events that took place 10 years earlier.
It focuses on Peter Wildeblood (Mays), a gay journalist whose lover turned Queen’s evidence against him in a trial that saw Wildeblood and two friends jailed for homosexual offences.
However, the case caused a backlash from sections of the public and the press, who felt it was unfair, and forced the government to set up a committee to investigate whether homosexuality should be legalised. On his release, Wildeblood was determined to help change the laws.
