Sun shines on Brown as she claims victory in singles contest
THE Northern Women’s Bowling Association’s Two-Bowl Sunshine Singles competition was won by president Irene Brown (Walker), who beat Dorothy Stewart (Dunston) 15-4.
This was the second of the Association’s season of charity events with all rounds played to 15-up.
In the quarter-finals, last year’s finalist Irene Stobbs (Heaton) had a tough struggle with Stewart but at 14-14 Stewart was able to trail the jack to earn a 15-14 victory. Defending champion Pat Smith (Ryton) lost 12-5 to Kay Cromarty (Ravensworth).
Pauline Shaw (Leam Lane) gave Brown a run for her money - only losing out by a single shot 15-14.
Janet Gray (Ravensworth) had no answer to the long-jack play of Ann Stevenson (Gosforth Empire), who prevailed 15-6.
In the semi-final between Stewart and Cromarty it was the Dunston player who was always in command with leads of 5-2, 10-3 and 14-4.
Stewart’s more accurate play rewarded her with a finals place with a 15-8 success.
Brown’s semi-final against Stevenson produced equal scoring in the early stages but, ahead at 9-6, Brown kept up sustained pressure to deny her opponent any further scoring - triumphing 15-6.
In the final, the comparative inexperience of Stewart was no match for Brown’s consistently good play.
A close shot by Stewart would be bettered by Brown as she limited her opponent to only four single shots to win by 15-4.
Brown was a worthy winner but every credit to Stewart for a very plucky battle.
Proceeds from the day went to the Chronicle Sunshine Fund.
