THE cast of ITV’s hit show Vera has been back in the North East filming for the new series.

Huge spotlights and trucks were spotted in Dinnington, Newcastle, on Monday night as filming continues across the region.

Temporary traffic lights were installed on the roads as the production team set up base near the Horton Grange Hotel.

A crew member said they were filming for the crime drama’s new series, which will see Brenda Blethyn return as the raincoat-wearing detective DCI Vera Stanhope.

Last month, the production team was busy recording in Newbiggin-bythe-Sea in Northumberland and Peterlee in County Durham.

Scenes have already also been shot in Seaton Delaval, Blyth and Seaton Sluice.

Filming for the eighth series is expected to last around five months, a ITV1 spokesman said.

The ITV drama has been a roaring success and has been credited with bringing an influx of visitors to the region.

The so-called “Vera effect” – with viewers proving keen to see the onscreen beauty spots for themselves – has also had welcome knock-on results for the local economy too.

Previous series have seen the cast and crew film around Newcastle, Northumberland and North and South Tyneside.

Viewers have watched Vera sample the delights of Newcastle’s iconic bridges, Collingwood Street’s Diamond Strip and the Crown Posada bar.

The show has also ventured around Dunstanburgh Castle and the industrial backdrop of the former Swan Hunter shipyard in Wallsend.

The new series of Vera is expected to air in spring 2018.
