Stop trying to rewrite history

WHENEVER the Conservatives 7pm on Saturday December 2.

I just think this is a great idea to bring the community closer together. My brother Colin Campbell, born and bred in Newbiggin Hall estate, and Junior Turner will both be performing on the night. Monies raised will be donated to MacMillan Cancer Research.

I was hoping there might be more past residents who would maybe join us for the evening, which would be brilliant. Tickets are £3.50. ANDREW CAMPBELL

Sadly, the 1940s were a prime example of how the West was caught with its pants down. The early victories of Germany and Japan, when examined, were truly astounding. They both had learnt a lot about war in WWI, and also, on how to fight battles.

Our huge army of 330k had to run for the beaches of the Par-de-Calais. Then two years later in the Far East another huge force of 120k was mopped up in weeks, surrendering at Singapore to a Japanese army of 47k that was running out of ammunition. The Americans too, lost all their holdings on the Philippines Islands plus an army of 80k POWs.

Currently, we in the West are in the ‘doldrums’ again, but the complacent ‘ruling class’ are in no hurry to ‘shake up the bag’ and get things moving again. In fact, I think they’re all on holiday! J CRESSWELL, Chester-le-Street
