Bowl-ed over by success

DELIGHT FOR ENGLAND AS THEY CLINCH TOURNAMENT

-

ENGLAND CYP Under-17 Girls won the International Rosebowl Tournament for the 10th time.

England competed against Wales and Scotland in the competition, which was staged at Cochrane Park in Newcastle.

NE Youth took over the management of the England CYP squad from Ambition in 2013.

The squad is made up of players selected after trials over several weeks, the final 16 competing in the Rosebowl Tournament.

All the players selected followed a training programme in the lead-up to the three-day competition and received a cap for representing their country.

The tournament kicked off with an exciting match which saw England edge past Scotland 2-1.

The following day England were on fine form to beat Wales 7-1, while Scotland played a friendly against local side Montagu.

The final match saw Scotland take second position when they beat Wales, which resulted in England winning the Rosebowl Trophy.

England captain Leonie Hutchinson said: “It was a pleasure to be part of the Rosebowl and mix with girls from different nations and share the experience with them.

“This year it has been a real honour to captain the team, especially with the great bunch of girls we have in the squad.”

The CYP team has in the past proved a platform for young footballers wanting to develop in the game, as many players from previous Rosebowl teams have gone on to play at international level as well as with clubs such as Sunderland, Manchester City, Liverpool, Everton and Newcastle.

NE Youth’s Jon Niblo said: “We were honoured to host the 2017 Rosebowl.

“However, this would have not been possible without the commitment and enthusiasm of head coach Laura Wareham, coaches Peter Beard and Michael Third and all the very talented players whom I am sure will continue to enjoy their football in future.”
