Community still in shock over sex abuse revelations

family of six children. Mr Gallon has 17 children with four different women.

He said the family was devastated when she was charged with such serious offences.

“She is the only white face in this whole group of people and she is the one being singled out for most of the abuse,” he said.

“It broke us when she was charged, we couldn’t believe it was happening. She was nothing but a bairn herself when she was supposed to be part of this gang, she wasn’t she was being groomed like the others.

“They charged her and threw her in jail on remand, they were the worst days of her life and I feared for her, she was suicidal and she’s terrified at the thought of going back there.

“Thankfully she was given bail but she has this hanging over her.”

Mr Gallon said his daughter got involved with Asian men in the West End as a teenager.

“I knew about the parties, everybody did,” he continued. “But when I found out Carolann was being given drink when she was underage I went to a house in Wingrove Road and I had it out with them.

“The guy in the house invited me in, offered me a cup of tea and went to hand an alcoholic drink to Carolann. I told him he wasn’t ever to give drink to my daughter and I warned him I’d be back if he ever did.

“I contacted the police and told them what was happening but nothing was done.

“She had difficulties at school, she took after me – I can’t read or write – and when she came across those men she was lost and vulnerable. She was too young to know what she was getting into, she was 17 when the SICKENED residents in Newcastle’s West End have slammed sex abusers for giving the area a bad name.

A total of 18 predators were convicted for exploiting some of the city’s most vulnerable girls and women.

But their sordid sex parties have brought disrepute to their community.

Now, angry residents have hit out at those who were caught in Operation Sanctuary and have labelled them “vile” as they rebuild the area’s reputation.

Retired public transport worker police say she committed her first offence.

“I dread her being sent to jail but her solicitor has told her to prepare herself for that.

“I did a week in Durham for criminal damage as a young man and I know what it’s like, I fear for her. She’s a caring daughter, good to her old man, she looks after me because I need care after losing my legs.”

The decision to charge Gallon, Amtaj Ali, 66, who lives in the city’s West End, said: “They shouldn’t do things like that, it has left the West End with a bad name.

“I have been here since 1977 and I’ve been a bus driver and taxi driver, but in all my years here I have never heard of anything like this.

“I’m shocked. Our community has hard working men and businessmen, all working hard. Newcastle is our second home and we love the Geordie people. We have met good people but this has broken my heart.

“If I was the judge I would give them double life inside the jail and they would never come out.

“This has brought shame on our community and over our young children. There are so many questions, why, why, why?

“It will take time to rebuild the good name of the community in the West End. Other nationalities give us dirty looks because we are Asian. They say they are all the same but we are not.

“We have given these people who did this a chance but they are bad. I don’t know how long it will take to bring this community back to normal.” of Hareside Court in Newburn, was taken by the Director of Public Prosecutions.

Northumbria Police’s Chief Constable, Steve Ashman, said the director was satisfied that Gallon was involved in the criminality, and not a victim herself.

“It wasn’t without very careful consideration that the decision was made to prosecute her,” he said. “She has been involved in this abuse.”

Barber Zee Zarei, 29, who lives in the area, said: “I think this has brought shame to our community. I think these people should be kept in jail for ever. Everyone is talking about it and it will take one or two years to the area to shake this off. It probably gives the Asian community a bad name.”

Navy engineer John Sulton, 32, who also lives in the West End, said: “It has definitely brought shame. It is not acceptable to anyone. If I had a kid and anyone did this to them I would kill them myself. It’s not acceptable behaviour.

“We all know who lives next door but we don’t know what goes on inside. I grew up in Kenya and knew all my neighbours. I have seen someone stoned for nicking a handbag and before he got to hospital he had died.

“British laws should be tighter, it involved kids at the end of the day. This will affect those kids for the rest of their lives.

“People need to be vigilant. This has brought a spotlight on this sort of thing and more people are aware of what has been going on. Now people will keep an eye on their neighbours.”

Mum-of-six Brenda Matheson, 47, of Ellsemere Road, said: “I have six daughters and my youngest is 16 and I walk everywhere with her.

“This case has brought a lot of fear to the area. I have been here for 13 years and one of the guys in Operation Sanctuary was in the same street. They are vile and horrible. I don’t know what they get out of it, they’re sick.

“It’s shocking, I think of my kids’ safety and I go with them to the shops. They should get life in jail.

Brenda added: “There are a lot of good people around here but this has brought shame to the area.”
