A SHOCKED wife has opened up on the “worst night of her life” as her husband battles to stay alive following a quad bike crash.

Father-of-five Alan Wallace came off the road and crashed into a tree on St Edmund’s Drive in Gateshead, near Heworth Leisure Centre, on Saturday evening.

Emergency services and an air ambulance attended shortly after 7.30pm, before Alan was taken to Newcastle’s Royal Victoria Infirmary.

Wife Angela says her husband was found lying in the middle of the road and has spoken of the agony of waiting on finding out more on the extent of his injuries.

Angela, 41, said: “It’s been the worst night of my life.

“He was just lying on the floor, and the ambulance were there in seconds.

“When they scanned him last night, there was no big internal bleed. I’m just waiting to hear if he will be alright.”

Alan, 38, broke his collar bone, left wrist and ribs, as well as bones in his neck and back after careering the quad off the road.

Cordons were put in place on the street while he received medical attention, and the air ambulance landed on the field at nearby Heworth Grange Comprehensive School.

Alan was anaesthetised at the scene and a Great North Air Ambulance Service spokesman confirmed he had suffered “lifethreatening” injuries.

A neighbour supporting Angela and the family, who did not want to be named, praised the actions of emergency services and admits she feared the worst for Alan.

She said: “We actually don’t really know what happened.

“Someone ran up and told the family, and a man from across the road ran across and put him in the recovery position.

“They worked on him in the road for about half an hour before they could even move him.

“Alan was in a really bad way. Looking at him, I honestly didn’t think he was going to make it.” Describing Alan, she said: “Alan is the most kind person you could meet, he would bend over backwards for anybody. He is a lovely, lovely bloke. “There’s nothing we can do at the moment until we find out what’s happening with him. “Alan is a fighter, he will pull through.” A North East Ambulance Service spokesman said: “We were called just after 7.30pm last night [Saturday] to St Edmund’s Drive in Gateshead after receiving a report of a road traffic collision. “We deployed an ambulance, a rapid response paramedic and a heart paramedic. We also requested assistance from the air ambulance. “The patient was taken to the RVI.” A Northumbria Police spokesperson confirmed officers remained at the scene for several hours following the incident to carry out their investigations.
