A bullied man has been put behind bars after finally turning on his tormentor and biting a chunk of his nose off.

Former Royal Fleet Auxilliary man Paul Williams had grown sick of a bully who had made his life a misery by harassing him and demanding his possessions.

A court heard the 43-year-old initially dealt with it properly, reporting what was happening and moving away from the other man.

But he was tracked down to his new address and Williams finally snapped and went to confront him.

The pair began scuffling in the street in the West End of Newcastle and Williams bit part of the other man’s nose off during the fracas.

Now, he has been jailed for two years at Newcastle Crown Court after admitting unlawful wounding.

Judge Tim Gittins told him: “The complainant, himself no stranger to the courts, had been in contact with you over many weeks before this incident.

“He had been bullying you, harassing you, demanding medication that you had and other property. Provoking you, in other words.

“I appreciate that was not a pleasant or easy situation to deal with.

“Initially you did the right thing and raised it with key workers, made a complaint and you were granted a move in accommodation.

“Sadly, that was not an end of it. He pursued you to the new accommodation.”

The court heard there had already been an altercation between the pair when the other man turned up again on March 17 in the early evening.

Judge Gittins said: “On this night further demands and threats were made to you outside your room.

“Ultimately, rather than doing what you should have done and avoiding confrontation and reporting the matter, you snapped and went out to confront him in the street.

“There was a scuffle, you rolled about on the floor and during the course of that you went to use your teeth.

“You bit him squarely on the front of his nose.”

The bite removed a large portion of skin to the front of the nose which was described as “disfiguring”. The victim had to have skin grafts and is likely to be left with scarring.

Judge Gittins said: “It was an unpleasant and no doubt painful injury to receive.”

Williams, of no fixed address, has previous convictions but none for violence and has mental health difficulties.

Andrew Walker, mitigating, said the victim has 197 previous convictions.

He added: “The complainant had provoked, indeed had plagued the defendant, bullying him for his possessions. Those incidents built up over a period of time.

“The defendant had a community psychiatric nurse at the time and that may explain his reaction in going to confront the complainant and biting him.

“There is always a risk, when someone has been bullied or assaulted, that somewhere along the line they will stand up for themselves.

“He went to confront him but not to bite him. But the incident quickly spiralled out of control.

“The offence was committed on the spur of the moment with respect to the bite itself.”
