Policewoman knocked out

PLEA FOR WITNESSES TO TROUBLE

- By KATHRYN RIDDELL

Reporter A POLICEWOMAN was knocked unconscious while making an arrest in Newcastle city centre.

Police were called to Castle Stairs near to the Quayside at 3.18am yesterday, where two men had punched and kicked people before making off towards St Nicholas Street.

When police arrived and began to arrest two men, two officers were assaulted and a policewoman was knocked unconscious.

She received treatment in hospital for her injuries and was later released. When the suspects were brought into custody at Forth Banks Police station, three detention officers and the custody nurse were also attacked. Police believe several people may have seen the assault, including four Asian men who came to help the police.

Acting Chief Inspector Steve Wykes, of Northumbria Police, said: “I’d like to thank the four men who came to our officer’s aid.

“It was brave of them to do so, but they left before our officers could get their details.

“I’d ask them to come forward and speak to us so we can thank them for their actions.

“The offenders’ behaviour is wholly unacceptable and will not be tolerated by Northumbria Police.

“While I am pleased to report that the officers are not seriously injured, this was an awful incident and the officers are receiving support.

“I’d also appeal for anyone who was in the area of St Nicholas Street and Castle Stairs who may have witnessed the incident to contact police.”

Two men aged 25 and 36 were arrested on suspicion of assaulting an officer in the execution of their duty and are in custody helping police with their inquiries.

Anyone with information should call police on 101, quoting reference number 110 of 14/08/17 or ring the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
