Tri starlet’s joy at World cash boost

A RISING triathlon star is set to realise his dream of competing on the world stage - thanks to Grassroots Sport, writes TONY HODGSON.
We reported last month how Sunderland teenager Matthew Phillips had been called up for the World Triathlon Series in Rotterdam in September but faced missing out due to lack of cash backing.
However, following our article, the 16-year-old has been inundated with offers of support - meaning it is all systems go for Holland.
Phillips, a member of the Sunderland-based Sun City Triathlon Club and one of five triathletes in the North East Regional Academy, is being backed by Guisboroughbased Bike Scene.
In addition, he has also received individual donations totalling £1,000 - more than enough to meet his travelling expenses, entry fee and accommodation costs.
Phillips said: “I am so pleased with the offers of support and very grateful to everyone who has shown interest in me.
“I was really worried I might not be able to go to Holland but I have raised more than enough now and cannot wait to get out there and compete.”
Phillips was one of four triathletes to clinch a spot in the GB squad at a qualifying event in Llandudno.
It will be the first time he has taken part in the World Series and he added: “I did not expect to make it as it is an under-20 competition as I am just 16 and there were a lot of good triathletes involved.
“I am hoping I can do quite well in Rotterdam.
“To finish in the top 20 would be great but I have my sights set on a top-10 place.”
Phillips has been involved in triathlon for three years – taking up swimming when he was eight before adding running and cycling to his repertoire.
He has competed in the Elite Super Series for two years, taking part in races across the country.
