Vital that Spartans tighten up at the back, says Armstrong

-

AFTER opening their Vanarama National League North account with victory over Tamworth, Blyth Spartans have the chance to kick on.

Spartans are tonight at Gainsborough Trinity, the bookies’ favourite to finish bottom, and then host relegated North Ferriby on Saturday.

Gainsborough lost their first two games but then won 1-0 at Nuneaton, with Ferriby bottom with three defeats and no goals. It is a window of opportunity for Blyth, who were excellent going forward in Saturday’s 4-2 win over the Lambs.

Manager Alun Armstrong was delighted with the first points since promotion but wants to see greater defensive solidity. Two goals have been conceded in each of the opening three matches, a pattern Armstrong accepts cannot continue.

Nathan Buddle was twice left for dead by wily Tamworth striker Reece Styche and culpable for both goals conceded.

Armstrong said: “It was great to get the win. We did well going forward and this time took our chances, which was the big difference.

“We have to do better defensively, though. Forwards in this league are more likely to punish you so we have to learn quickly.”

Blyth head for the Northolme in good spirits and Armstrong wants to bring at least a point back to the North East.

He added: “Gainsborough have a decent striker and have shown they can score goals.

“We will have two banks of four and look to stay in the game.

“We have enough fire-power and creativity to score goals. We just need to keep it tighter and I should have the same squad available again.”
