Toon close in on a deal for Stoke striker

- By LEE RYDER

NEWCASTLE United are close to completing a deal for Stoke City centre-forward Joselu.

The 27-year-old is on Tyneside and close to agreeing a £5million switch from the Potters after undergoing his medical.

Joselu will take Rafa Benitez’s spending to £35million for the summer but the Spaniard is hoping to add Chelsea winger Kenedy to his squad on a season-long loan deal.

Benitez will be eager to complete the deal for the Germanborn striker due to his limited options in attack with just Dwight Gayle and Aleksandar Mitrovic on the books as senior forwards as the club look to move on Emannuel Riviere.

Joselu spent last season on loan at Deportivo La Coruna and netted six goals after a spell at Stoke.

The striker had arrived in England from Hannover 96 after scoring eight goals in the Bundesliga in 30 appearances before notching four times in 22 Premier League appearances for the Potters.

Speaking about his career earlier this summer, Joselu said: “I know I am a player who can give a lot, I can contribute a lot to a club, I can make goals and assists.

“I consider myself a very complete player.

“What I want and look for is continuity, then things will come good for me.

“The team has to be successful, too - if you score 15 goals and your team is on the decline it is not the same.

“I want to play and we are looking for a team with aspirations.”
