Tipi team plan a winter wonderland

HADRIAN’S TIPI TEAM SUBMIT PLANS FOR CINEMA SITE

THE people behind the Hadrian’s Tipi pop-up bar in Newcastle last Christmas have revealed plans for a ‘winter wonderland’ in the city centre.

Plans have been submitted for approval and include two signature wigwams, German-style food stands, two fire pits and a bandstand for live music.

The organisers have identified the site of the former Odeon cinema on Pilgrim Street as a location and hope to stay open into the early hours.

Work is under way to clear the site to make way for development after the old cinema collapsed in April and the people behind the Hadrian’s project want to get in while the city centre spot is still empty.

If permission is granted, the Christmas market, which will sprawl over 1,000sqft, will run from October 1 to December 7.

Plans say that, ideally, the site will be open seven days a week and serve breakfast between 8am and with alcoholic drinks served from 10am and stay open until 1am.

Proposals for the layout show 10 food stands, Santa’s grotto and long bierkeller-style tables around the site.

Organisers claim the development will create around 80 fulltime and part-time jobs across the bars, kitchens and security.

The plans will have to be approved by Newcastle City Council. Despite the success of a bar outside Central Station last Christmas, in June planners blocked plans for the attraction to return to the same spot through the summer. The report rejecting the development read: “The proposed marquee structure with ancillary facilities would be an incongruous feature, harmful to the setting of Newcastle Central Station (a grade I listed building) and the character of the central conservation area.”
