Canadian graduates to pro ranks with Eagles

POINT GUARD BASI IS FAB’S SIXTH SIGNING FOR NEW TERM

-

AFTER five years of college, Amarjit Basi has certainly served his apprenticeship – but the point guard still finds it surreal to at last be able to call himself a professional basketball player.

“AJ” is the sixth new addition to Fabulous Flournoy’s Newcastle Eagles squad for 2017-18.

“To be honest, all of this still kind of feels surreal,” said the 5ft 11in 24-year-old. “It happened so quickly. And it’s crazy that I can finally call myself a professional basketball player.

“Being a professional basketball player has been a dream of mine ever since I first picked up a ball at the age of five.

“However, it wasn’t until my later years of university where I really began to give it some serious thought. In my senior year I applied for my British passport, and when I received it, I knew it was a sign.

“I’m excited for the opportunity to start my professional career in Newcastle.

“I look forward to meeting everyone, playing for you and especially becoming part of this great community. I hope you plan on staying the best fans in British basketball!”

Basi was born and raised in Canada to a basketball-playing family, but his mother was born in Wolverhampton and he has family in England.

He comes with a reputation for three-point shooting and tenacious defence, and was a co-captain of The University of Manitoba Bisons in his senior year.

“Looking at AJ’s tape it is clear he knows how to score the basketball,” said player-coach Flournoy.

“He has played at a solid level in Canada and worked hard to reach this point in his career. We’re pleased to give him the opportunity to see if he can take the next step.”

Basi averaged 14.7 points and 3.2 rebounds a game as the Bisons reached the Canada West Conference Final and their first CIS playoff appearance since 1985.

“Aside from my shooting ability which is often quoted, I intend bringing a relentless work ethic,” he said. “I always try to demonstrate leadership qualities and bring a passion for leading by example in every practice and workout.”

After five years at college, he arrives having done his homework.

“I’ve been doing my own research about the club and learning about the city in general,” he said.

Basi follows Jaysean Paige, Saah Nimley, Jure Gunjina, Kai Williams and Terry Martin in joining for next season. They could make their debuts in the September 8 pre-season friendly against Team USA at Sport Central. Tickets are available now.

Another 2017-18 signing is due to be announced tomorrow.
