Abnormal numbers of Pacific pink salmon have been caught in our region by netsmen. As many as 200 have been caught in North East nets.

One was captured on the River Wear on rod and line near Durham recently with more expected.

These salmon have a distinctive hump back. Anglers who catch one should dispatch the fish and report its capture to jonathan.shelley@environment-agency.gov.uk at the Environment Agency.

These fish are believed to have originated from the stocking of the White Sea region of northern Russia and Kola Peninsula to develop a commercial net fishery.

These are now being seen in numbers in UK waters, having migrated into our waters and river systems.
