A passion for helping people runs in the family of these three Northumberland sisters.

Sarah Killips, 26, and Samantha Barr, 23, have dedicated their lives to helping others by working in hospitals around the world.

Now, their youngest sister, 18-year-old Sophie Barr, is following in their footsteps to study medicine at Aberdeen University.

Mum Katy, of Hepscott, said: “The family is so proud that they are all going down a career path each of them wanted.

“It is something that they are all passionate about and they are all going to have fulfilling careers.”

Sarah graduated from Aberdeen University after studying medicine and has spent a year working at a hospital in New Zealand.

Her sister Samantha took the same course at Newcastle University and now works at Cramlington’s Northumbria Specialist Emergency Care Hospital.

Sophie is hoping to follow her sisters’ career path as she gets ready to start university next month.

On A-level results day, the King Edward VI School pupil achieved three A grades in chemistry, maths and biology.

Katy said: “It was a wonderful day and there were a few tears. We are a very close family and they are close as sisters.

“Even though she was around the world, Sarah was on Facetime because she just wanted to be there.”

But it isn’t only the three sisters who have a passion for the medical profession.

Their mum Katy worked as a sister in The Freeman Hospital’s cardiothoracic centre, while their late grandad, Allan Barr, was a GP in Ashington.

Katy said: “They’ve grown up with a lot of medical talk around the dinner table.

“We both found it very rewarding and I know they enjoy it because they are all very empathic with people.

“We are all very happy and proud they are doing what they want to do.”
