Big learning curve over recruitment

RAFA Benitez feels Newcastle United are going through a “learning process” as they find their feet back in the Premier League.

The Toon boss wasn’t just talking about what unfolded on the pitch at Huddersfield, but suggested the club were also being educated on the recruitment front after missing several transfer targets earlier in the window.

Speaking after the 1-0 loss to the Terriers, Benitez was in sombre mood but refused to panic.

When asked by the Chronicle if some of the concerns about transfers were now ringing true, Benitez said: “Maybe. It is a learning process, and we have to learn quickly.

“Maybe it is too soon for us. It will take some time for sure.”

Newcastle have already been forced into fielding players out of position with Chancel Mbemba thrown in at left-back against David Wagner’s side.

Benitez said: “We have three injuries, and it is not easy to manage when you have three injuries in defence.

“That makes things more difficult, but it is the Premier League and we have to learn.”

Benitez, though, still felt Newcastle could have emerged with something out of the game.

He added: “I could say we deserved to get something, but my experience in the Premier League is that you have to take your chances because if you make mistakes, you will pay for them.”

After the game, Newcastle legend Alan Shearer tweeted that it would be a long hard season for the Magpies.

When the social media post was put to Benitez he said: “It is a learning process, and we have to learn quickly so we will be working very hard trying to prepare the team as well as we can for every game.”
