Jack is Halpin himself to two gold medals

-

JUST 24 hours after moving to the top of the UK under-15 shot put rankings, Jack Halpin was back in action at the Scottish Age Group Championships in Scotstoun Stadium, Glasgow, writes BILL McGUIRK.

While he had ‘only’ lifted one gold and one silver medal the previous day in Leigh - and despite the excess travelling - he went one better by topping the podium on two occasions.

He could not quite reach the high of the Northern Championships as far as his performances were concerned - but his 14:32m in the shot put and 40:41 in the javelin easily accounted for his rivals.

Gateshead Harriers had celebrated success earlier when Josh McKeown triumphed in the under-15 100 metres after recording 11.51s - 11.50s in the semi-final.

Team-mate Matthew Lawson finished in fourth place (11.76s) with Blaydon’s Dale Turner crossing the line seventh in 11.95s after 11.90s in the semi-final.

There were silver medals for Blaydon’s Georgia Kyle in the under-20 discus (35:89m) and Gateshead’s Charlotte Richardson (pictured left) in the under-15 100m in 12.59s after recording 12.56 to win her heat.

Gateshead’s James Hutton also lifted a silver medal in the under-15 200m, improving from winning his heat in 24.84s to 24.30s in the decider. In the under-15 girls’ high jump Tynedale’s Heather McDonald ended up in second place and Ellie Morris (Blyth) was third - both athletes clearing 1:54m.

There were fourth-place finishes for Gateshead’s Liam Eastgarth in the under-15 300m and for Max Pearson (Tynedale) in the under-20 1,500m.
