A hectic spell lies ahead for the Diamonds

- By BARRY WALLACE

BY far the busiest period of the SGB Championship season for Newcastle Diamonds begins at Glasgow tonight, the Tigers thirsting for revenge after losing 53–39 at Byker last Sunday.

There is no let-up for skipper Ludvig Lindgren and his men as tomorrow night they host Scunthorpe Scorpions at Byker (6.30) before travelling to the Eddie Wright Raceway for the return match on Monday afternoon.

Then, after one day off, the Diamonds travel to Peterborough on Wednesday for another league match to complete an exhausting spell of four meetings in five days.

It is a tough test of men and machines with precious little time to put any major mechanical problems right, with all the travelling involved plus the everpresent injury threat.

Newcastle No.1 Robert Lambert misses the first slice of action at Glasgow as he is in Latvia today chasing his dream of becoming under-21 world champion.

Bronze medallist last year, Lambert has much hard work ahead of him in the two remaining rounds of the event as he finished with nine points in the first round 12 behind the winner.

He will be back for tomorrow’s Byker match against the Scorpions, who took the Diamonds to a last-race decider on their earlier visit before going down 46-44.

Two former Diamonds, Lewis Kerr and Tero Aarnio, got into double figures last time and again pose a serious threat.

Team manager George English said: “I have been unable to get a suitable guest replacement for Robert at Glasgow due to unavailability of riders so we will have to share his races out among the others under the rider replacement regulation.”
