Ex-Magpie Anita pleased at win over his old rivals

-

FORMER Newcastle United midfielder Vurnon Anita admitted it was nice to get a win over Sunderland last weekend – not just for him personally, but for the Newcastle United fans as well.

Anita spent five seasons at Newcastle but was not offered fresh terms at the end of last season

He left the club in June and joined Leeds United on a free transfer the following month. The Dutch international was also part of the Whites side which ran out 2-0 winners at Sunderland last weekend.

And Anita, who was given plenty of stick at the Stadium of Light because of his allegiance with Newcastle, admitted it was nice to get one over on his old rivals.

“I just do my thing. I could hear it but I just did my thing,” said the former Ajax star. “I knew that would happen but I was prepared. Of course, [it was nice to get a result] also for the Newcastle fans.”

Anita’s Leeds side have made an unbeaten start to the Championship season and are highly fancied to be in and around the promotion places at the end of the season.

Anita, of course, helped Newcastle win the Championship title last season and he feels there are many similarities between the Magpies side of last season and his current Leeds side.

The 28-year-old added: “There are a lot of similarities but this year we have started the league better than last season, so we are a little bit more confident.

“It’s a long league and you have to take it step by step.”
